From our Readers – Kerry’s Racers

July 3, 2012

You know how we like junkers and rusty scale models! We also like old school race cars, as you may have noticed from our latest combined project: the 56 Sunliner from Fireball Roberts and the 57 Chevy Black Widow. Well, Kerry got both topics into one build with this 57 Ford.

As he explained to me in an email, he wondered “what if Fireball Roberts would have had a dirt track stock car and left it behind a barn somewhere.” I love this rusty racer. It would make a great barn find scale model!

You can really feel the speed on those scratches along the side. The flat tires give the ride a real junker look. This build is actually a kit bash: the chasis comes from the Edsel kit. Kerry got be really inspired to build an abandoned old race car to put into my old wooden gas station project.

These are less of my topic, I must admit, but I like this build a lot too! Kerry used actual rust from some metal tubes he found at work. Now that’s authentic!

As well as in the 57 Ford, the 60 Impala has an opening trunk lid.

Hello Iggy, I must say my cars look good online!!! Thanks for putting them up!!! I’ve been thinking of building separate dioramas for the pair. I thought of your “Old Barn” build for it. Having it poking out from inside. Or like you say in an old garage seen would look kool as well!!!!

I really like Kerry’s Fireball Ford. It looks really great, lots of excellent weathering and details. The idea behind it is AWESOME! There has to be some “forgotten” racers out there somewhere, and Kerry nailed it. Great work.

Thanks guys, glad ya like the cars. I wanted to do a “What If” car like Fireball decided to campaign a dirt car for one year and he went out for a few races, didn’t like it and parked the car to be forgotten.

guys,
while I can certainly appreciate the work in both of those old racers, the truth is: race cars are cannibals – one dies & another consumes it’s remains………
keep up the good work,

Thanks guys, I just got done with a Dukes General Lee. It’s a jump gone wrong, and am currently working on a demolition derby car right now. It’s a 61 Impala.
