Making the facade of Miami’s Colony Hotel in 1:43 scale – #1 Structure

May 4, 2013

This time I’m starting a whole new project in a whole new scale. I needed a change.

I’m building a facade of the world famous Colony Hotel (Miami Florida) in 1:43 scale to display a few die cast cars that I have. Many years ago, we went to Miami for holidays with the whole family. I was fascinated by the art deco district and spent entire days 7and nights) taking pictures of dozens of buildings.

The Colony Hotel is one of the most famous and  symbolic buildings on the Ocean Drive in Miami Beach. It’s very minimalistic facade make it a very easy model to build. Still, there are many challenges in this project.

Here you have the first step on how to build the main structure of the building. I decided to use grey cardboard for this project. Grey cardboard offers me a clean straight surface but still a little rougher than styrene what is ideal for a plaster texture of the facade.

In future steps I’ll show you how to make the windows and other facade details.

Enjoy the video!

Another fantastic job on this hotel!!! But I’ll prefer 1/25 scale!!!

I sure hope your going to offer 1/24-1/25 scale plans of the Colony Hotel!

fantastic your job, what material do you use for the walls?

Seb May 6, 2013 at 6:12 pm

is use grey cardboard 1 and 2 mm thick for the walls, styrene profiles for the windows.

Interesting subject. I want to keep track of the WIP. Hope you have a local police car in front, or was the Highway Patrol the law enforcers then? And thank you for sharing your skills.

Seb May 6, 2013 at 6:13 pm

I put a highway patrol car in fornt of the building because that’s what I just had lying around. Don’t worry, a proper car will be place in front of the building when finished. 😉
