Tokheim 39 – Gas Pump scratch build scale model

I don’t know why I always had a fascination for gas pumps, specially old and rusted ones. I originally wanted to build a 1:1 scale replica, but not having enough time and tools to do it, the project was frozen.

Many years later, when starting our junkyard diorama project, I decided I must had a gas pump. I googled around looking for a good and realistic scale model but I just couldn’t find any satisfying gas pump. So I decided to build this gas pump scale model from scratch.

Let me share with you a few details of this project.

I developed the blueprints based on an original Tokheim 39 gas pump with help of a great guy I met who owns one. Thanks Thunder!

I wanted to make a highly detailed scale model so I searched the web looking for detail pictures of the pumps and parts. That’s how I found this great website oldgas.com. I think there is no other place on the web with more information about gas pumps that this website with it’s huge forum.

After a provisional assembling of the pump as “brand new” I just couldn’t help to proceed with the weathering effects. Many friends said I must be crazy for weathering this beauty, but after all this is ModelJunkyard, and we like our models old, dirty and rusty. The model you see here is a 1/18 scale version.

If you want to improve your scratch building skills, have a look at our GAS PUMP tutorial.

As always, we offer this tutorial as a digital version and printed version at amazon.com. This special step-by-step tutorial includes all blueprints and images needed for the model in the most common model car scales (1/5 – 1/6 – 1/8 – 1/10 – 1/12 – 1/16 – 1/18 – 1/24). You can choose your scale, make an build your gas pump to join your model cars collection, or diorama.

I hope you enjoy it!

Great job on the pumps, Seb! I’d like to do one or two someday! Maybe for my next diorama!

Thank you guys for the feedback! This is one of my favorite models until now. Old gas pumps are just great.

I have to agree with you, weathering and junking things like gaspumps seem to give them more character and believability. Nothing stays pristine once it leaves the factory.
