Beyond the hobby – Professional use of dioramas and scale models in Hollywood and advertising

November 14, 2012

The other day I came across this great examples of professional scale models. Scale models are mostly known as a hobby or as a presentation object used mostly by architects and designers, but in fact, there are lots of situations where using scale models can offer great results compared to other options.

I love to see the “making of” videos of movies with lots of special effects. I’m always amazed by the great models the build. One of my favorites is the nuclear blast scene from Terminator 2. When you see the movie it looks extremely real. The video below shows many examples of great scale models used on movies. Although due to the development of computers during the past few years and the use of 3D effects, scale models are still in use, check out this pictures.

Another great application of  scale models I’ve found lately, is the advertising business. In this case, scale models where used to promote the city of Gent in Belgium. It’t not about the realism of the scale models, but much more about transmitting the feeling of the city and the potential of it using scale models.

Would you also like to turn scale modeling into your profession?

Hi Rob, I don’t know how old you are and what kind of education you have. There are many fields to work as a professional model builder: architects, city planners, estate developers, real museums, movies industry, prototype making, etc.
But pay attention! Lots of scale models are being replaced with hyper realistic 3D animations.
