1957 Chevrolet Bel Air [6] – Engine details [video]

October 21, 2012

We are slowly approaching the end of this project. Beeing it a 1/16 scale model I decided to add as much detail to the engine as possible.
The first thing you’ll normally do is search for images online. Of course that’s always a great resource. But sometimes I just couldn’t find THE picture I was looking for showing the one or the other engine detail. Engine bay pictures are normally not so good, dark, blurry, etc.
So I’m glad I met the guys from trive.com who were very helpful and pointed in the right direction: the original passenger assembly manuals for all 3 Chevys (1955 ,1956 and 1957)

If you want to build a high detailed model car, there is no better reference than this kind of manuals. I’ve been searching for more assembly manuals online but there is not so much to be found. If you find more of this manuals, please post the link in the comments below! Thanks!

Back to the project. Unfortunately I came across this manuals after scratch building several details, and now I realize they are not 100% accurate, but sometimes you have to drop a line somewhere and continue.  I decided to build as many (accurate!) details as possible in the engine bay such as wiring, hoses, brake booster, heater system, battery cable connectors, etc. So here you have a few pics and -of course- also a video showing the process.

What do you think? Can I add more details somewhere or improve something? Please let me know.

Hi Seb,
I think you need to make one of the battery cables red.

The brake master cylinder should not be a dual cylinder, dual cylinders were not available until later in the 1960’s. But your overall detailing and weathering is wonderful.

Hi Keith, I did my research and somehow this was wrong! May be I came across some pictures of a Chevy with an updated brake system. Well… I will imagine that the brake system of my Chevy was updated in the late 60’s when the original system broke down and the owner decided to improve it by installing a dual cylinder.
Sometimes it doesn’t matter how much research you do, you always miss something! I know that now for any future ’57 Chevy model I build. Thanks again for the feedback!

Hi,

Very interesting video – thank you. One question for you, as I’m new to detailing, are you connecting both ends of your cabling? In other words are you connecting the other ends of the battery cables to the solenoid or just tucking them under and out of the way? Same with the other lines and cables.

Thanks!

Hi Dodger, thanks a lot for your feedback! Most of the cables/lines are connected on both ends, some of them are just made what’s visible and not connected on the other end. I love detailing my models, but sometimes I think I have to drop a line somewhere and stop detailing when I know those details will never be visible.

Thank you for the reply, Seb! Truly a great effort in detailing and an inspiration. :)
