57 Chevy Black Widow and 56 Ford Sunliner Fireball Roberts

September 14, 2012

It has been a while since I’ve last posted something about these two racers. As you may remember from the previous posts, I had some trouble with the 1957 Chevrolet Black Widow. I had a small accident that ruined the whole paint and I had to start all over again.

The paint looks pretty neat now. After the primer, I painted the black and white. Then, I polished the whole car and this is the result. As the car is going to be weathered to simulate the car after the race, I won’t clear coat it. I’m very happy with the result, the paint reflects the lines of the cutting mat very clearly and evenly.

Fireballs ride got some special attention on the paint too, as I told you in a previous post. I polished the whole car and used some bare metal foil. My brother cut the cover from the back of a calendar. It is a very soft and flexible material than looks and feels just the right way and has a great texture. Now the challenge was how to make the clinches. I punched over 50 small circles from a thin metal foil (from the neck of  a wine bottle). Then, I carefully glued them and that’s the result.
