One important part of junk model cars is the rust. I use three different techniques for the different kinds of rust and weathering effects you may find on real junk cars. One of them is based on real rust powder that I make by myself. You can use this rust to make the car look dusty and dirty, or apply it on areas where rust has to be strong and clearly present. You may also use it for some junkyard diorama elements too.
I made a short PDF Ebook on how to make rust that I share for free with subscribers of our newsletter. Feel free to sign up and you will get the ebook right away!
Let the rusting begin!

i just started doing junk model cars and im having trouble with the rusting system i have its called rust all
Hey Dustin,
I haven’t used “Rust all”, although I know it. I use three kinds of rust to make junk model cars. One is my home made rust powder. Another one is a rust paint made by Sophisticated Finished (modernoptions.com).
What kind of problem do you exactly have with “rust all”? Feel free to share – maybe I can help you to make it work.
Iggy
i want to learn more about rusting model cars
Dear Iggy.
I was wondering if you can How To books for building cities. Also I am hoping you are still building and if so, will you also start projects with cities?
PS: Great Work!
Hey Jacob,
building a city is kind of an ambitious project. We are indeed thinking of many other buildings to write tutorials about. For instance, the Texaco Gas Station. Stuff like the Colony Hotel (Art Deco style) could be interesting too. I guess smaller scales like 1/32 may be more suitable for building entire cities (if not smaller, like 1/48).
Thanks for the comment!
Iggy

Hi. I get the email, but as yet haven’t been able to get your How to make Rust yet. How do I do that?
Hi Guys, I’m really an experienced model builder that’s always looking for new methods and techniques to enhance the realism of my models! I particularly liked your tutorial on making rust. I’m making some now as I write this, but did’nt catch the part on how to apply the finished product to the model itself.
Hey Bob,
you can apply it in many different ways: you may just use it dry to make the model dirty, or apply it with a wet tissue. Otherwise, you may also apply it on wet paint to make it look more rough.
Iggy
Hey Iggy, I really like your ideas for making the rust, but I don’t get how to apply it and keep it on…. I already subscribed and I like the realistic cars you can make. Is there any way you could send a link to your book Underhaulin’ How to make junk model cars?
Hey Austin,
thanks for the comment! You can apply the powder on wet paint or with a wet cotton swab. It is very easy! You can find our books, including Underhaulin both as digital ebooks or printed books here: http://www.modeljunkyard.com/products
Have fun!
